How the common-rail injection system works

A common-rail system is a modern fuel injection technology for diesel engines. Unlike conventional systems, it separates pressure generation from the injection process. Its defining feature is the ability to generate and supply extremely high system pressures of up to 2,700 bar.

How a Common-Rail system works: The high-pressure pump delivers the fuel under high pressure into the high-pressure rail, where the rail pressure sensor monitors the pressure. From there, the fuel continues to flow under high pressure to the common-rail injectors, which atomize it finely and inject it into the cylinders at the exact time. The engine control unit regulates the entire process via electrical connections.

How the Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system works

The system injects an aqueous urea solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust stream. In conjunction with an SCR catalytic converter, this process converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless water and nitrogen, significantly reducing emissions.

How the Denoxtronic Exhaust-Gas Treatment System Works: The Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system injects an aqueous urea solution, AdBlue, into the exhaust stream. Within the SCR catalytic converter, this solution enables a chemical reaction that converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless water and nitrogen, thereby reducing environmentally harmful emissions. Based on engine and exhaust-gas data, the dosing control unit calculates and regulates the optimal amount of AdBlue required. A supply module pressurizes the AdBlue and delivers it to the dosing module. The dosing module, in turn, ensures the precise metering, atomization, and distribution of AdBlue into the exhaust pipe.

Tips for changing the pump kit

Bosch pump kit with packaging

Changing the pump kit saves time and money

  • If the pump in the Denoxtronic 5.x system is defective, it is not necessary to replace the entire delivery module, including the AdBlue tank.
  • The pump, which is positioned separately under the AdBlue tank, can be replaced individually.
  • The supply module and tank remain in place, only the pump itself is replaced.
  • With the Denoxtronic 5.x pump kit, Bosch offers an economical solution for the aftermarket.

Innovations for over a century

From the first diesel injection pump to the revolutionary common-rail system that boosted performance while drastically reducing emissions, and on to today's Denoxtronic systems designed for the strictest emission standards, Bosch has decisively shaped the evolution of diesel technology.

  • Historic Bosch inline injection pump for trucks from 1927
In 1927, Bosch started series production of inline injection pumps for trucks.
  • Bosch common-rail diesel injection system from 1997
1997: The common-rail diesel injection system is introduced. It increases vehicle performance, lowers emissions, and reduces fuel consumption.
  • Modern Bosch Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system
2004: The Bosch Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system is used in trucks for the first time. Since then, it has been continuously developed to meet increasingly strict emission standards.
