A common-rail system is a modern fuel injection technology for diesel engines. Unlike conventional systems, it separates pressure generation from the injection process. Its defining feature is the ability to generate and supply extremely high system pressures of up to 2,700 bar.
High-pressure pump
Generates the extremely high fuel pressure required to supply the rail.
Rail pressure sensor
Continuously monitors the fuel pressure in the high-pressure rail and sends this data to the engine control unit.
High-pressure rail
A central hydraulic component that connects the pump and the injectors. It stores the compressed fuel and makes it available to the injectors.
Engine control unit
As the central control unit, it regulates the entire process via electrical connections to the components.
Common-rail injector
Precisely controlled via the engine management system, the injector meters the high-pressure fuel from the rail, atomizes it finely, and injects it into the cylinder at the exact time.
The system injects an aqueous urea solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust stream. In conjunction with an SCR catalytic converter, this process converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless water and nitrogen, significantly reducing emissions.
Dosing control unit
Calculates and regulates the optimal amount of AdBlue based on engine and exhaust-gas data.
AdBlue
Aqueous urea solution that is injected into the exhaust gas stream to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
Supply module
Pressurizes AdBlue and feeds it to the dosing module.
Dosing module
Ensures precise metering, atomization, and distribution of AdBlue into the exhaust pipe.
