Compressor
When the air conditioning system is activated while the engine is running, the belt-driven compressor starts compressing the gaseous refrigerant within the closed air conditioning loop.
Condenser
During this process, the gas heats up and then enters the condenser under high pressure, where it is cooled by the passing outside air and condenses.
Dryer
Any water or impurities introduced into the liquid refrigerant are then removed in the dryer.
Expansion valve
From the dryer, the liquid refrigerant, which is under high pressure, is injected into the evaporator through a narrow expansion valve.
Evaporator
When injected into the evaporator, the refrigerant expands and starts to evaporate already at low temperatures. The heat required for the evaporation process is extracted from the passing air and cools it down. Since cold air can bind less moisture than warm air, condensation forms on the fins of the evaporator, which is conducted to the outside through a hose. This explains puddles of condensation water under parked vehicles.
Cabin blower
The cabin blower then conveys the cold air into the interior of the vehicle. The compressor sucks in the gaseous refrigerant again and the cycle starts all over again.
The entire air conditioning system will play an important role in the thermal management of electric vehicles in the future. Previously used only for interior cooling, the air conditioning circuit will in future also be used to cool the powertrain components of hybrid and electric vehicles. This keeps the battery, electric motor, and power electronics within the optimum temperature range to ensure reliable operation. Well-functioning thermal management is therefore becoming increasingly important and has a positive effect on range, fast charging and a high level of climate comfort.
In addition to the new A/C components, Bosch already has air conditioning service units, oils for the compressor and accessories in its range for maintaining air conditioning systems. The Bosch training program also includes a qualification certificate for air conditioning technology. Bosch thus offers parts, test equipment and service for the maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems from a single source.
